Located on the prestigious Herengracht, the house was built between 1685 and 1687 for Amsterdam's mayor, Jacob Hop. It later became the home of Abraham Willet and Louisa Holthuysen, passionate art collectors who filled the residence with an impressive collection of artworks and decorative objects. After Louisa's death in 1895, she bequeathed both the house and its collection to the City of Amsterdam.
